A conventional fire alarm system will use fire detection zones (wired back to the main control panel). Each zone will identify a particular area of the building in order to identify the location of a fire.
Each zone can consist of various devices, including automatic smoke/heat detectors, manual call points, sounders and strobes. In the event of a fire being detected either automatically or manually, the system control panel will then operate the alarm.
The term “Clean Agent” is defined as an
“Electrically nonconductive, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishant that does not leave a residue upon evaporation”.
Using water to extinguish a fire is not always the ideal choice

An automatic sprinkler system is intended to detect, control and extinguish a fire, and warn the occupants of occurrence of fire. The installation comprises fire pumps, water storage tanks, control valve sets, sprinkler heads, flow switches, pressure switches, pipe work and valves. The system operates automatically without human intervention. Each sprinkler head contains a glass bulb or a fusible link. The bulb contains a liquid and a quantity of vapour. The liquid expands under the influence of heat as do the fusible link heads. When the temperature reaches a certain predetermined level – typically at 68 /79 Degree Centigrade – it will expand the liquid and break the bulb or fusible link, which in turn releases water directly onto the seat of the fire.
The hot gases from a fire will make the sprinkler operate. A fire creates a narrow plume of hot air and gasses that rise to the ceiling and spread out. These hot gasses activate the sprinkler head at the correct temperature. The installation is the most common type and a typical sprinkler installation is shown in figure.

Fire Fighting Hydrant Systems are the most commonly used systems, in many residential and industrial projects. Fire Hydrant Systems forms the basis, of Fire Protection Systems, without Fire Hydrant System a Fire Protection System cannot be called a Fire Protection System. It will be a superficial system. (With respect to large areas, in general). Fire Hydrant System installation is relatively easy.
Water is stored in a water tank throughout the year for 365days. This water tank is connected to the pump room. From the pump room, there are two to three main pipes. These pipes form a network of pipe which is always kept pressurized, covers the factory compound and the factory. The pressure is Approx. 7bar to 10bar.When a fire is seen by a person, he opens a hydrant outlet to activate the hydrant system and points hose stream in the direction of the fire. A very strong flow of water (900 LPM approx.) now, attacks the fire and the fire is eventually extinguished. The pump continuously pumps the water to maintain the system pressure.
Fire Hydrant Systems are very strong and can be used from medium to large sized fires. Fire Hydrant Systems, have a long range. Medium velocity water spray sprayers provide a continuous water spray with medium velocity consisting of finely divided water droplets. These systems are ideal in fighting against the fire involving light oils. As emulsification is not possible in this case, the high velocity water spray systems cannot work in this type of fire. These systems sprayers are mostly used in combination with the other effective fire protection systems. The specifically designed nozzles produce a cooling spray which has very high capacity to absorb the heat.This water jet is sprayed on the adjacent plants and structures which ultimately minimizes the damage and the risk of explosion.
Fire suppression foam is comprised of three parts: foam concentrate, water, and air. When mixed correctly, these parts form a homogeneous foam blanket that extinguishes flames by the combined mechanisms of cooling, separating the flame source from the product surface, suppressing vapors, and smothering. This makes foam suppression systems an effective option for protecting flammable and combustible liquids.
Fixed foam generators apply foam onto the fuel surface to create a foam blanket and suppress the vapours. The positioning is such to minimise the possibility of damage to the equipment from an explosion or fire. Subsurface injection products inject foam into the bottom of a fuel tank and allow it to float to the surface to spread and extinguish the fire. This method became feasible with the development of foams resistant to fuel contamination.
